For Thenew Housing Association and Crossreach, FBN developed a local care hostel for adults with alcohol dependency in Dalmarnock in the east end of Glasgow. The property is able to accommodate 14 adults in 12 bed-sitting rooms with en-suite shower rooms and two wheelchair accessible flats. The property is a modern 2 storey building which is fully wheelchair accessible and had carefully designed to blend in with the neighbouring housing development.

Central to the clients brief was the reduction of the hostels environmental impact, by cutting CO2 emissions. To achieve this the hostel was highly insulated coupled with a ground source closed loop geothermal heat pump system working with solar energy was used to provide hot water heating and underfloor heating.  The system was designed to be a value hybrid where the low grade waste heat from the solar system was used to recharge the borehole system thus using ‘free’ heating to maximize output and performances of both systems. The introduction of electrical smart systems were also used to reduce energy wastage which included movement sensors for lighting in corridors and hotel style card operated energy controls to individual bedsits.
